Questions

Question

Is Historypin free to use?

Yes! It’s free to browse pins, collections and tours.

It’s also free to join and then you can:

  • create a collection or tour using your own and other people’s pins
  • invite others to help you manage your collection
  • add your own pins (photos, videos and sound clips)
  • create a tour using your own and other people’s pins
  • comment on, favourite and share pins
Question

How can other people use my content?

On Historypin, people can add your pins to collections and tours, add comments and tags to them, favourite them and share them on social media. Via the Historypin embed, they can embed your material on other sites, though you will always be attributed and the link will bring you back to Historypin (like an embedded YouTube video).

When you upload material to Historypin, you choose to give it one of a series of licences. This governs what other people can do with your material. We encourage people to use a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC BY) which means other people can reuse it as long as they credit you.

Read more about licensing at Creative Commons and in Historypin’s Terms of Use.

Question

What size image should I upload?

It’s up to you. Always upload the quality of image that you’re happy to be accessible on the web. We recommend 1920px x 1200px as this gives a good quality image and can allow people to zoom in on details. Please note we won’t always show it at this size, we’ll make it smaller for things like thumbnail previews and use on mobile devices.

Question

I’m having login problems. Can you help?

If you originally signed up to Historypin with a Google account (Gmail address or Google+), make sure you are signing into Historypin using “Login with Google,” not “Login with email.” Many members who signed up to Historypin over two years ago and who are just now returning to the site would have had to sign up with a Google account for example, as that was previously our only available login method.

If you signed up to Historypin more recently and used “Sign up with email,” you can recover a lost password by clicking “Forgot password?” next to the “Login with email” prompt. This feature is not available for members who signed up with a Google account. If you have forgotten the password associated with a Google login, follow the Google account password recovery process here (click “need help”):

https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?hl=en&continue=https://www.google.co.uk/%3Fgws_rd%3Dssl

Finally, if you’ve forgotten the email associated with your account, feel free to email us at hello@historypin.org and we’ll look that up for you.

Question

How do I delete a pin, collection, or tour?

To delete a pin, collection, or tour, make sure you are logged into Historypin. Then visit your main profile page and look at your list of pins, collections, and tours; you should see the “delete” and “edit” buttons underneath them.

Question

Can I do a bulk upload of content onto Historypin?

Yes you can. Visit our bulk upload page to download the template and read information on how to get started.

Question

Can I embed my Historypin collection on my website or blog?

Yes. First, navigate to the view that you would like to share, say your collection gallery, a single pin, or your profile page. Then select the “share” icon on the right-hand sidebar and copy and paste the embed code.

Question

Where did your app go?

We have actually removed our app from the app store whilst we work on re-designing our mobile offer.

There is a large demand for a Historypin app, and we are working on getting there! We’d be interested to know the parts of app you enjoyed or found useful if you used the old one; just send us a message at hello@historypin.org to let us know.

Question

I want to report an issue with the Historypin site.

If you notice a something not-quite-right about how our website is working and would like to report an issue, please use our short bug form. Once you fill this out, we will be notified by email and will get in touch with you as soon as we can.
