With the LGBTQ America project, you can learn more about the historic places and cultural resources that have played a central role to LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) communities throughout the United States, and find out how you and your community can add places to the map as well.
Below, you’ll find some short video tutorials to create a Historypin Profile and add content about places that matter to you.
- Creating and customizing a Profile
To use Historypin you need an email address (either Google/Gmail or another email of your choosing), or a Twitter or Facebook account. If you are an institution or community group member, remember to choose or create one that you are happy to share with colleagues.

2. Prepare your Content
Image size Always upload the quality of image that you’re happy to be accessible on the web. We recommend 1000px x 1000px as this gives a good quality image and can allow people to zoom in on details. Please note we won’t always show it at this size, we’ll make it smaller for things like thumbnail previews and use on mobile devices.
The higher the quality of image the better – this means that your image will look good after compression, on high resolution displays and will benefit when we introduce zoom functionality.
Licensing You can choose from a variety of licenses, including any of the Creative Commons licenses. Read more about CC licenses here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/
Metadata To appear on the map, all content must have a date, title and location. These can be approximate. For LGBTQ America it will be useful to add tags such as type of place or event (ie. church, parade) and about the community being depicted, such as “lesbian,” transgender” etc. This will allow people to search for relevant sites more efficiently.
Video and audio Video and audio must be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud first. You can then use our upload interface to link the YouTube video or Vimeo and the corresponding metadata to Historypin (see more below).
3. Upload content
The easiest way to upload content to the project is through the main project page.
- Once on the main LGBTQ collection page, scroll down and find the regional collection that your content falls under. The regions are: Pacific West, Northeast, Intermountain, Midwest, and Southeast.
- Once you’re in the appropriate sub-collection, click either the “Add a Collection” button to create your own themed collection to add pins to, or “Add a Pin” to contribute an individual photo, story, sound-clip, etc.

Uploading content through any collection within LGBTQ America will add the content to your Profile, and will also automatically add it to the LGTQ America project.
Bulk Uploader If you have a large number of items, you may wish to use our Bulk Uploader which will allow you to upload hundreds of images and their metadata in one go. If you have latitude and longitudinal data, these will be pinned to the map. Please note that overlaying images on Street View has to be done manually.
